Former coroner Dr. Steve Wojeck returns to Toronto after 21 years working at a clinic in the Congo. While he reunites with his family, he gets embroiled with the plight of a family of refugees from Guatemala.

A streetsweeper finds a unconscious woman while cleaning the streets and decides to help her out by bringing her to his home, but little does he know that the woman is lives a life of crime.

Isaac Geldhart is a Holocaust survivor who, overcome by grief at the recent death of his wife, seems determined to run his publishing firm into the ground by printing books that have no hope of financial success. His son Aaron, who also works at the company, grows frustrated with Isaac's emotional decline and attempts to take over the firm. The resulting crisis involves Isaac's other two children, his daughter Sarah and his dying son Martin.

The expedition was left without light or heating right before the four-month long polar night set in, with an outside temperature of -70 °C. A number of episodes were wiped during the early 1970s, as was standard procedure at the time.
